The Copa del Rey is Spain’s national cup and its oldest competition, first played in 1903. More than a hundred clubs take part, from the top two divisions down to the regional leagues, and since 2019–20 nearly every round has been a single match hosted by the lower-ranked side — a format designed to give smaller clubs a home tie against the giants.
Only the semi-finals are played over two legs; the final is held at a neutral venue, usually in spring. Barcelona have won the trophy more than any other club, ahead of Athletic Club, whose 2024 win ended a forty-year wait and brought Bilbao’s famous barge celebration back to the river Nervión.
The winner qualifies for the Europa League and takes part in the Supercopa de España, played in January alongside the top sides of the league. Golalarm covers every Copa del Rey tie with live scores, and with lineups, events and statistics for the later rounds.
