The Primeira Liga is the top division of Portuguese football, played since 1934. Eighteen clubs play 34 rounds from August to May, with the bottom two relegated and the 16th-placed team facing a play-off against the second tier.

Portuguese football is defined by the Três Grandes: Benfica, the record champions, Porto and Sporting CP have won every title bar two — Belenenses in 1946 and Boavista in 2001. The Lisbon derby between Benfica and Sporting and O Clássico between Benfica and Porto are the fixtures the season turns on.

The league is also one of Europe’s great talent markets: players developed at the big three’s academies and scouted from Brazil and Africa routinely move on to the Premier League and La Liga. The champion and runner-up go to the Champions League, with further European places via the table and the Taça de Portugal. Golalarm follows every match with live scores, lineups and statistics.
