La Liga, the Primera División, is Spain’s top flight and has been played since 1929. Twenty clubs meet home and away across 38 matchdays between August and May, with three points for a win; the bottom three drop to the Segunda División and the top four qualify for the Champions League.

The league has been shaped by the rivalry between Real Madrid, the record champions with 36 titles, and Barcelona, with Atlético Madrid the most frequent challenger; Valencia, Athletic Club, Real Sociedad, Sevilla, Deportivo La Coruña and Real Betis have also been champions. El Clásico between Madrid and Barcelona is the most-watched club fixture in the world, and the Pichichi trophy for the season’s top scorer carries a prestige of its own.

Spanish sides have also dominated Europe: La Liga clubs have won more Champions League and Europa League titles than those of any other league. On Golalarm every La Liga match has live scores, lineups, statistics and player ratings, and the table updates as results land.
